Turmeric Time: Health Benefits and How-To Use

Turmeric is an herb highly used in India for thousands of years. For all this time, people cooking with this powerful herb believed it to have strong and lasting health benefits. Now, with modern science, we are beginning to see truth to this claim. 

Majority of the health benefits arrive from Turmeric's anti-inflammatory compounds. Inflammation can cause a whole host of medical problems, ranging from metabolic syndrome to heart disease to cancer and, of course, arthritis. Some scientists are even finding that serious inflammation can increase or potentially even cause cognitive decline. However, with nature's medicine such as turmeric, these issues can be combatted. Turmeric has also been seen to provide an extra boost in antioxidant capacity, which is especially helpful for the immune system and brain function. 

So how does one make this strong spice taste yummy in order to reap all of the wonderful benefits? Read on for our 3 favorite turmeric drink recipes: 

Turmeric Tea (Golden Milk): 

  • 2 cups milk of choice such as almond, coconut, or dairy 
  • 1 tsp turmeric
  • ½ tsp cinnamon powder 
  • pinch of ground black pepper
  • tiny piece of fresh, peeled ginger root 
  • pinch of cayenne pepper 
  • 1 tsp raw honey
  1. Mix all ingredients in a small pot
  2. Heat for 5-10 minutes over medium heat 
  3. Drink immediately

 Lemon Turmeric Cleanser:

  • 2 cups Water
  • 1 Lemon, squeezed
  • 1/2 teaspoon Ground Turmeric
  • 1/4 teaspoon Ground Ginger
  • 1 Tablespoon Honey
  1. Mix all together hot or cold 
  2. Let dissolve and fuse
  3. Drink!
Tropical Tumeric Smoothie:
    • 1 cup Peaches
    • 1 cup Mangoes
    • 1 Banana
    • 1 cup Orange Juice
    • ¼ teaspoon Turmeric
    • ¼ teaspoon Ginger
    1. Blend all ingredients together with a bit of ice and water
    2. Add whatever might be needed to make it the consistency of your liking
    3. Sip away in the summer heat!
